From our President --- Marcia Gray

Dear Helena Trail Ride Members,

I had planned to send out a post card correcting my errors of last month, but here it is already well into May and time for the next edition of the Pony Tales.

One learns more from mistakes than successes so I figure I'm getting a great education. In my eagerness to be super organized for the upcoming year I managed to scramble the calendar of events and turn everything topsy-turvy. Hopefully, none of you have these events etched in stone, and have used erasable pen or pencil instead.

It seems that the odd numbered months will have a membership and board meeting, and the even numbered months we will have an activity and board meeting. We welcome suggestions from anyone on a topic of interest for a meeting program or activity. Just let us know what would like to see going on in our club.

June – month 6. There will not be an O-Mok-See the 5th. Instead, we discussed having an informal play day for our club on at a practice day of Tuesday, Thursday or a first Friday. We would only have a few events, and some of them may not be official O-Mok-See events, but based more on fun than times. Come to the May 18th meeting and discuss what you would like to see this activity look like. Contact Keith Herrin, O-Mok-See director, for more direction.

July, month 7. We will have a membership meeting and the activity of taking gate admission for the Last Chance Stampede and Fair. The Fairgrounds administration called to hear if we were going to continue our contract with them for admittance to the east and west gates. With the board of directors approval, I agreed that we would man the gates July 27-July 30, which will be our "activity" for the month. It is not too soon to think about the hours of the days and evenings you would be able to help out. It is our biggest fund raiser of the year, and we need to let our V.P., Jessica, know she can count on us to volunteer.

The 4-H Sales committee has requested the use of our Clubhouse during the Fair. This has been agreed upon by our board as it has done for at least the last 20 years. We have several HTR members who are also 4-H Leaders who have agreed to check on the building periodically during the Fair. The Sales committee understands that we will still be using our building during the Fair.

Lifetime and deceased member plaques. Shirley Herrin has started updating the plaques that are in the meeting room. We had received funds from a grateful member to continue this project, and I am glad we can now apply the funds to this project.

The Clubhouse is sparkling after the cleaning crew finished April 23rd. Thanks to all who joined in making our meeting place shine.

Anyone with suggestions for programs or activities, please come to a meeting and share, or let a board of director know what you would like to see or hear about.

Any member can contribute to the Pony Tales. For sale or wanted items and articles must be to Sharon by the 10th of each month. Only half kidding, I told Sharon that if it wasn’t in the Pony Tales it didn’t happen. It is important to me that no Helena Trail Rider member is left out of the loop because he/she doesn’t have the latest social communication device. Send items to Marcia Gray

Maintenance director - Bill Gray

Helena Trail Rider cleanup day was successful! Helping out at the Clubhouse were: Judy Gardner, Keith Herrin, Shirley Herrin, Kate Hollandsworth, Heather Hollandsworth, Cassy Lynn, and Bill Gray. Heather's sidekick, Ryker, and Cassy's sidekick, Blake, provided youthful entertainment. We cleaned the bathrooms, kitchen, ovens, meeting room, washed the windows, hung the curtains, changed the furnace filter, and put in new light bulbs. After all the work was completed we enjoyed hamburgers and pot luck. Good conversation and good food put smiles on our faces. Thanks a bunch to all that helped.

Trail Director- Cassy Lynn

We are having our 1st Trail Ride on May 29 at the Reservoir. Then our 2nd Trail Ride will be on June 5th at the Head Lane trailhead. I might need some help leading these rides. I hope many of you will join me. I'm very excited to get this year going.

I will have more rides on the schedule soon. Chris Warren has been helping me out with everything, so a big Thank You to her for everything. If the directions are wrong on any of the rides, please let me know.

May 29- Helena Holding Reservoir:
Take Custer East, go to York Rd. Go left and head toward York. At the Fox Ridge golf course you start heading uphill, keep heading toward York. About half way up the long hill there is a sign on the right for the holding reservoir. Turn right, follow the dirt road to the boat ramps, turn left and go to where they fly the remote airplanes and park. Easy Ride.

June 5th- Head Lane (Scratch Gravel Hills):
Go North on Green Meadow to Franklin Mine Road turning West. Continue west to the stop sign. Turn north (right) onto Head Lane, and go to the top. Stay to the left, following the BLM trail signs, and then take a slight right to the parking area. Parking is somewhat limited. JOIN US!

Chris Warren – There are a couple nearby poker rides if anyone in the club is interested

May 21 - Poker ride at the Gallatin River Ranch. Information can be obtained thru , or call their concierge at 406-284-3200.

May 28 - Virginia City Poker ride. Information can be obtained at

June 8 - Pony Poker ride. I don’t have a lot of information on that one, as apparently the location has changed. Information can be obtained at

July 9 - Two poker rides, both with Back Country Horseman. One is with Gallatin Valley BCH, and is located at Bridger Ski resort. All riders have to be signed in by 10. The other is with Upper Clark Fork BCH in Gold Creek. You also have to be signed in and ready to ride by 10. Both BCH rides offer lunch afterwards. I have attended both, and they are worth the drive. They have early sign up, which saves a little pocket change., then go to state chapter. I believe the information is under the events tab for both Gallatin and Upper Clark.

If anyone wants additional information I gave the brochures to Cassie, and will post them on the board at the club as well. Thanks, and have a super day

Note from Carol Ham on a future event: Julie or Lynora from the Tri-Arabian Club will be coming to give a talk on their trail ride/training, and maybe doing a joint ride.

We are trying to get a feel for what you would like to see the club doing…so if you have any suggestions for proposed events, please contact:
