Message from the President

We had our annual elections in January. I would like to welcome back Sherri Onstott as our maintenance director. And a warm welcome to new board members Jessica Erickson (Trail Rides) and Carol Ham (Social). Keith Herrin is once again your Vice President and I am once again your President.

On February 7th, I joined several past presidents and lifetime members at the Great Northern Hotel where the Helena Trail Riders and Keith Herrin, Sr. were inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center. There were a total of 37 inductees from 12 Districts. That was one packed conference room!!! Each inductee had their own cheering section, some big and some small, but all together it was quite the crowd. Even the social hour the night before (Friday) was crowded. The Dillon Junior Fiddlers were there and put on quite a show. There was approximately an hour and a half of singing and playing by a very talented group of young kids as people mingled about chatting with friends.

Last weekend I got a last minute invite to go to Bozeman with a fellow Trail Rider to watch Buck Brannaman give a 3 hours clinic to a group of students from Montana State University who are in a colt starting class taught by Buck’s daughter. It was 3 hours well worth it. I am sure for the next several times I ride that I will be very aware of which of my horse’s feet is on the ground and which are not… and trying to keep him balanced. All of the young horses that are being started will be auctioned off in April. Those 2 and 3 year olds have got a fabulous start on them if you know of anybody looking for a new horse. From looking at my Facebook page I believe that there is a way of going to the MSU website to see videos of each of the horses… I haven’t done this myself, but a couple of friends were posting videos from the site of horses they were drooling over. I honestly have to say about the only thing that got to those young horses during the clinic was the clapping of the spectators at the end … and even then they were pretty well controlled.

As those of you who were at the January meeting know, sometime in December (thankfully after the Christmas Party) the Fairgrounds discovered they had a water leak over on the west side of the grounds and the water to our building was shut off. I am happy to announce that I spoke with Keith Hatch this last week and we have water at the clubhouse again!!!! They have narrowed the area of the leak down to somewhere from the west side of the Multi-Purpose Building over to the campground. Keith said that they are going to be writing up and getting bids for a new water line to be put in as the more they dig, they more holes they find. Currently the water line goes over to the West Arena before jogging North to the campground. We discussed the fact that there is only one hydrant over at the arena and that it would make things a lot more convenient if there was another hydrant. So, based on where the majority of folks park during O-Mok-Sees, he is going to write up putting in another hydrant down at the south end of the arena when they dig a new water line. I have no idea when or how long any of this will be...but I will keep you all informed about it as I hear more.

Lastly, as a reminder, our next meeting will be held on March 18, 2015. The Board of Directors meets at 5:30 and the General Meeting starts at 6:30. Member are welcome at both meetings.

Heather Hollandsworth Helena Trail Riders President

It was an honor for Bill and I to attend the Helena Trail Riders induction into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame & Western Heritage Center. There were over 500 people in attendance from every part of Montana. The emcees shared fascinating background stories of the person or organization inducted. We laughed some, empathized a lot, and listened to amazing descriptions of inductees overcoming countess adversities with an intact, but maybe drier, sense of humor. We were proud to stand with so many Helena Trail Riders when our club's induction was announced. The actual building, to be located in Big Timber, looks to be a fine place to house these historical memoirs. Thank-you, Helena Trail Riders, for the privilege to attend a once in a lifetime event. Bill and Marcia Gray

Some members have asked for the different sizes that are available. Polos are also available with a small logo on the front. A quality one would be about $25.00. T-shirts are going to range from $11 to $16.00. Long sleeve T's are available at a little more cost. All shirts are red with the Trail Riders logo in black and white. I plan to order in March for a April delivery, so if you have not already let me know you want one or more, please do so soon. 443-2679 or

Hi folks. I'm so excited that we are getting closer to spring and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that feeling. Some of these warmer days have really given me spring fever.

I've been fortunate to be able to ride a few times at the multi-purpose building with fellow club members Eric & Joanna Easton and Cynthia Warner. It's been nice to get on Toby and remind him who's still boss!

On February 7th the Montana Saddle Club Assn. held their spring convention in Anaconda. I attended representing our club, along with Cynthia Warner and Carol Ham. It was the first time Cynthia and I had attended one of these before and it was pretty informative...and at times entertaining. There were some by- law recommendations that were voted on, I won't list them here, but if you are interested, please let me know and I'll pass them on to you. It was voted on and passed to accept the bid of the Sawtooth Riders Saddle Club to hold the State O Mok See this year. They are located in Augusta but will be using the arena of the Great Falls Saddle Club. It's nice that we won't have to travel too far this year in order to participate. Make sure you get this on your calendar. State is always held on Labor Day weekend. The games that will be run were also established and they are as follows:

The four basics-Flag, Key, Poles and Barrel & Stake. In addition we will be running Figure 8, Speed Barrels, Pair Turn & Burn and Team Speed Barrels for adults, Arena Race for under 8 and Polo Turn for 8-11. I believe that the schedule of O Mok Sees for our District will be included in this Pony Tales. It should be a good O Mok See season.

There has been some discussion about our club putting on a judged horse show and a judged obstacle/trail course competition. It would be nice to have some feed back. Please feel free to email me or give me a call at 442-1717 if you have some input. I want to make sure that our club is holding events that everyone wants to be involved in so feed back is really important. Also, please invite your fellow riding buddies even if they aren't members. What better way to get new members than inviting them into our club activities.

Well, I think this brings you all update on what's happening in the O Mok See world. I hope to see you all at our March meeting. Vickie Blixt, O Mok See Director
