FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the Dog Days of summer! Hope everyone's summer is going well and you've all had a chance to take part in a few trail rides, O-Mok-See and corral work with your horses and mules. Well, another Last Chance Stampede and Fair has come and gone. I think the gate working went well for the most part and we got it done! I hope to have a report at the next meeting from the fairgrounds as to our performance and their take. A big Thank You goes out to Sherri for all her efforts to round up gate workers and a big Thank You to all that worked the gates! Thanks to all.

We also had a great Ice Cream social with about 50 in attendance and about 6 flavors of ice cream. Thanks to all that contributed to this fun social event. The music was excellent too--thanks Sonny and Rick! We have a fun ride coming up soon with the Ten Mile Drivers club. Hope you all can make it. See you on the 18th!

Building and Maintenance

Not much to report from my end. I have to say, I was glad when things started to dry out earlier this summer so I no longer had to mow the lawn at both the Clubhouse and the West Arena on a weekly basis. However, I then had to start watering the front lawn at the Clubhouse on a weekly basis to keep the new grass from dying. So far, I'm holding my own!

I've got a design worked up for the new West Arena stairs and I hope to get started on them when I get my strength back from working the Fair gates. I also hope to get the second door installed at the West Arena and the East windows on the Clubhouse this fall. Folks have volunteered to help so all I have to do is get my ducks in a row.

Last, I have committed to our final work session on the CD Trail project on August 28th. This should finally conclude all work on the 14.5 mile segment that we started on in September 2008.

Trail Rides

The last few rides went really well and were well attended and I was told we had a nice group for the stampede parade. As many of you have heard I have a new job with the city so won't be able to lead any more rides this year so I'm counting on everyone to step up and lead one. I will still help with getting out the info. The next scheduled ride/drive is with the ten mile drivers in Cherry and Granite Creek west of fort Harrison. August 21st. IT WILL START AT 9.00 DUE TO THE HEAT. Just past the fort going towards Birdseye at the first railroad tracks take a left on Barrett rd. go 1/2-3/4 mile. On the right will be the RV ranch corrals. This is where we will start.

Other items of interest Hunter Burnham won the showmanship and trail classes at the 4-H horse show along with the pole bending and driving classes that she did with Magnum. She took reserve high point senior. Then at the fair she got reserve overall showman in the round robin showing. This year they even had to show chickens!!!! She is now in Oklahoma City checking out the QH youth world competition that she has qualified for next year in trail and showmanship. Thanks to everyone helping with the gates at the fair I think it went quite well.

Historian

Please email me at least three recipes (or more) that are your favorites, your mother’s favorites or whomever’s favorites (men, you are not excluded from this!). Please give a little history on the recipe if you can. I would like to have a section of old time recipes, their history, etc. I would prefer the recipes be in a Word file but if you don’t have access to it you can also submit recipes by mail. If you have any questions please call me at 458-3913 or email at ornrycwgirl@in-tch.com. Mailing address: Cheryl Schmidt, 7092 Applegate Drive, Helena, MT 59602

Also – if you lead a trail ride, please send me a small write up on how the ride went, how many people attended and mail any pictures you may have taken to me for this year’s scrapbook/photo album. Please give the name of the ride, date and write on the back of the photos the names of the people in the photos. Thank you!

Note: I asked for recipes starting in March 2010. So far only seven people have given me recipes (and I truly thank the people who have sent recipes, all the recipes are great!). I’m a bit disheartened but still want to do the project. I know we are all busy but I’m not asking anyone to help put the book together, just send recipes. I know that once the project is completed everyone will enjoy and be proud of our club’s culinary diversity!

The Last Chance Stampede Parade was great, good weather and our group made a wonderful showing! I can only put in a couple of pictures but the rest of the photos will be in our 2010 photo album/scrapbook. Which by the way… this year we have a beautiful, leather covered photo album/scrapbook made by member, Kory Packer.
