From our President --- Marcia Gray

Dear Helena Trail Ride Members, In my enthusiasm to clarify our membership meetings, I have messed up a successful working calendar. Please ignore my wordy explanation in the March Pony Tales of what the calendar looks like. I plan to send out a correction by USPS soon. My apologies for any inconvenience I may have caused.

This is activity month. To try to avoid cancellations due to weather, the board has chosen April 23rd for our clean-up day. Bill Gray, maintenance director, is planning to cook burgers on the grill (buns too), and attendees can bring a dish of their choice to share. We will be meeting at 9:00 a.m., so to get as much cleaning and repairing done as we can before the lunch break. Protective gloves and specialty cleaning tools members have brought to previous clean-up days have been, and will be, appreciated. Dusting, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, changing bulbs, and organizing are some items on the to-do list.

Our next Board meeting will be on April 20. The purpose will be to pay the bills and conduct any other business that cannot wait until the regular membership meeting in May.

This past weekend, April 1, 2, 3, we completed a mutually beneficial exchange with the High School Rodeo Club. They used our Clubhouse for a rodeo office. They donated $75.00, paper products, and worked up the West arena twice. They are also willing to help with needed repairs and rock picking at the West arena at a soon to be determined date that is not on a weekend. Our by-laws state when a non-member is using our building there must be a Trail Rider in attendance. Thanks to Carol Ham, Shirley Herrin, Kate Hollandsworth, Keith Herrin, Heather Hollandsworth, Vicki Blixt, Bill Gray, and Cassy Lynn (who got a baby sitter so she could help) for taking the time to fulfill our policy requirements. We spent a lot of the time visiting, looking at old albums, and promoting good will with another horse related organization.

O-Mok-See- Some have suggested we cancel our plans to hold a Play Day on June 4th unless there is a tremendous amount of support to go ahead with it. We have a mandated O-Mok-See on June 5th at our arena and will need lots of help just before and on the 5th. We need to hear your opinion of the June 4th cancellation.

Member use of the arena is every Tuesday and Thursday and the first Friday of the month.

Ticks, weeds and flies. We are checking with other Trail Riders to see if they may have the same abundance of ticks that we do. This year, we are removing ticks from the horses daily. We are experimenting with using a drop of melaleuca oil (tea tree oil) in 4 ounces of mineral oil, applied to strategic tick biting areas of the horses. It seems to be repelling them so far. We have had to look very closely to find any ticks since application. Those pesky weeds seem to be in full force also, hugging the ground in an effort to avoid detection. Knapweed and hoary alyssum seem to be the main course for our war on weeds this year. We have already seen a healthy hatch of flies, hope they froze to death with the next night's low temperature. Fly Predators don't arrive until May in the high country, so it is a waiting game for us. If any of you have a great way to permanently get rid of any of these unwanted pests, we are all ears.

If you have a program or presenter you would like to suggest for the club meetings, please let one of directors know and we can get them on the "soon to be edited" calendar. We welcome continuing education and information pertaining to the interest of our members. I hope to see you at a meeting or activity soon!

Anyone with suggestions for programs or activities, please come to a meeting and share, or let a board of director know what you would like to see or hear about.

Any member can contribute to the Pony Tales. For sale or wanted items and articles must be to Sharon by the 10th of each month. Only half kidding, I told Sharon that if it wasn’t in the Pony Tales it didn’t happen. It is important to me that no Helena Trail Rider member is left out of the loop because he/she doesn’t have the latest social communication device.

Vickie Blixt, O-Mok-See Director

What is O-Mok-See? O-Mok-See is the most common term used in the Western United States for events in the sport of pattern horse racing. Most events are run with contestants simultaneously running in 4 separate lanes (3 for small arenas), with each contestant riding in a 30 foot wide lane, and can include individual events such as barrel racing and pole bending. The origin of the term "O-Mok-See" is thought to specifically originate with the Blackfeet people where they described a particular style of riding as "oh-mak-see pass-kan" meaning "riding big dance".

The MSCA (Montana Saddle Club Association) has adopted and will promote the sport of O-Mok-See. This sport allows the entire family, young and old, to compete and enjoy their horses together. Check out the attached 2016 O-Mok-See schedule. First scheduled date is for May. Vickie

We are trying to get a feel for what you would like to see the club doing…so if you have any suggestions for proposed events, please contact:
