Odd numbered months will have a membership and board meeting. Even numbered months we will have an activity and board meeting. This months activity: Fall Chili cookoff and social on October 17.

From Our President -----------Howdy Trail Riders!

Pony Tales October 2018 from Halloween to Christmas……

Howdy and welcome to fall/winter(?) in Montana. I was hoping for Indian Summer but got 6 inches of wet snow instead.

Riding bareback seems the most fun and best way to keep warm.

Be sure to bring your best chili to our chili contest October 17th. This year we are asking you to bring a favorite pie to share as a desert. The pies won’t be judged, but the chili will. Prizes will be awarded. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. Just come and have fun, chili or not. (Click here for more information)

District 2 is hosting a haunted house October 19th and 20th at the Helena Trail Rider clubhouse. There is a charge, but all are welcome. Less scary events for youngsters are planned from 4:30 to 6:30, while 6:30 to 9:30 is reserved both nights for those needing more effort to be frightened.

We have requested a small family of 2 to 4 people for our annual Christmas donation to the Salvation Army. As soon as a needs and wish list is available, it will be emailed out so you can start shopping early. Be sure to let Heather know (even though I haven’t asked her yet) what you purchase so we don’t double up some items and omit others.

Helena Trail Rider Christmas party is December 9th. The club will provide the ham, turkey, rolls and mashed potatoes, while the members make their best side dishes and desserts. Relish trays and condiments are also provided by members. With this much notification ahead of time we should have a great turnout, for a great time!

Elections anyone? Yes, I am getting weary of unrecyclable mail entering the house on a daily basis. Only a couple of weeks to go! However, the Helena Trail Rider elections are held in January after dues are paid. We need you to come to vote for president, vicepresident and a couple of directors. We are in need of a nominating committee as well as people who want to run for an office. Please notify anyone listed on the front cover of this newsletter if you would to run for an office.

Keep warm and dry until we see you to celebrate and eat. Marcia

Anyone with suggestions for programs or activities, please come to a meeting and share, or let a board of directors member know what you would like to see or hear about.

• Any member can contribute to the Pony Tales. For sale or wanted items and articles must be to Sharon by the 10th of each month. (trailridershelena@gmail.com)
• It is important that no Helena Trail Rider member is left out of the loop because he/she doesn’t have the latest social communication device. Please let us know of any member who is not receiving the newsletter either via e-mail or by snail-mail.
• Send items you wish included in the newsletter to trailridershelena@gmail.com.

From Julia Curtis, Social Director:

Don’t forget the Fall social get together as our activity on October 17. Please let Julia Curtis know if you can help with decorating the tables with Halloween colors, decorations for center pieces, and Halloween music with dancing (jdcurtis26@gmail.com, 449-0360).

This is an early Halloween party. We will have a judged chili contest, and you may bring a carved pumpkin to be judged. Prizes will be given away. We will have music and dancing, and all that would like can bring a pie to share. I hope to see you there on October 17th. (Click here for pumpkin carving information)

From Sharon:

Every month I will try to add a short section on trail riding areas near Helena, most of which the club has been to at least once. This month’s site is the Helena Reservoir Trail.

With riding days getting shorter, a close by, shorter trail! There is a five-mile trail that goes around the entire Helena Regulating Reservoir. The ride is in open terrain, and the north side can get a little swampy. Dress for possible breezy weather, as it sits on top of the hill. In addition to many species of songbirds and waterfowl, this beautiful body of water and surrounding grasslands support Hungarian partridge, doves, whitetail deer, and more than a few foxes and coyotes. Don't let your dog off its leash and into the water because there is a hefty fine for such behavior.

To get there, travel east on Custer Ave., about one-half mile past Costco take the left onto York Road. Travel 5.9 miles to Helena Regulating Reservoir Rd (top of hill, on right side, and there are two entrances. Go left. The second entrance goes directly to the trailhead). Plentiful parking exists at both entrances on the north side of the reservoir, and restrooms are available.
